It's fun. With kids' bikes, gravel bikes, CX and XC bikes – as long as it's reasonably agile. (Of course, it also works with long full-suspension bikes – it's just "over-biked".) Perfect "no-hill flow" :-))

Unfortunately, it was closed when I was there 🥺

Beautiful gravel strip along the large Peel. I call it glamour gravel. So actually doable with all types of bikes. On warm days busy and narrow in some parts. So watch out.

The former lock with sloping sides is part of the Noordervaart, a canal in North and Central Limburg. It was constructed between 1803 and 1810 as part of Napoleon's Grand Canal du Nord. It is now a branch of the Zuid-Willemsvaart. The current Limburg Noordervaart is 15 km long, from the Zuid-Willemsvaart near Nederweert to Beringe. The canal has been permanently no longer navigable since 2022 because the lock is equipped with a permanent water blockage with an overflow function. WWII: The intersection of the canals was and is an important landmark for aircraft. On the other side, to the left of the concrete plant, you can see a large lawn. This is a former island on which there used to be bunkers, the row of trees on the other side shows the old course of the canal. During the liberation in 1944, the front was stationary for 6 weeks along the Wessem-Nederweert and Nederweert -'s Dukenbosch canals. At the point where you are now standing there was a separation between no man's land (Budscop-Ospel area) and German occupied territory (towards Nederweert-Eind). Along the canal you will still find traces of the war today.
