Beautiful resting place directly at a pond with bench and table

Eight artificially raised burial mounds from the Iron Age (circa 700 BC), partially restored to their original state, the northeasternmost with a ring of poles as it once was. Several of the urns and pots discovered in 1962-63 were loaned by the National Excavation Service to the Grevenbroek Municipal Museum, Generaal Dempseylaan 1. From under the highway bridge on the way to the nature reserve I passed this St Gertrudis church near Maarheeze

I love older churches, which are always familiar landmarks to me. From far away, you can see we're approaching Maarheze.

Need a break or just a cup of coffee? It's always busy in good weather, as the monastery is conveniently located on several beautiful cycling routes. There's also a small shop at the monastery where you can buy various abbey beers.

August is the month to cycle around here. Beautiful heathlands with African savannah vistas.
