This electric pumping station was commissioned in 1936 by then-dike reeve H.C. de Jongh. Two memorial plaques on the pumping station commemorate the two previous (steam) pumping stations. The pumping station was modernized in 1998. Today, it is controlled by a computer in Druten.

The castle has an eventful history, with its origins dating back to 1331. Compared to other castles at home and abroad, Dussen Castle is modest in size. But that is precisely why it has a unique charm that many visitors embrace when they enter the courtyard after the bridge and gate. The courtyard is beautifully enclosed by a colonnade from the seventeenth century, which is rare in the northern Netherlands. This creates a romantic and intimate atmosphere. In 1632, Veerhuis De Zwaan was built on a river dune, serving both the 'small ferry' to Gelderland and later the 'large steam ferry' between 's-Hertogenbosch and Rotterdam. Over time, it transformed into an inn with overnight accommodation for both ladies and gentlemen, as illustrated by the swans on the western facade. On the other side are 'De Kleef Aen', an old weigh house with a scale for weighing goods for embarkation, and 'De Zwaan' from 1708, where carriages were stabled and rented out. The history of De Zwaan is steeped in meaning. Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and his wife stayed here in 1811 during their inspection tour of the fortifications. During the famine of '44/'45, the vault under De Zwaan served as a shelter, etc... Although the ferry house now serves as a residence, it is still sporadically made available to couples who want to get married via the still present ferry jetty.

The Veense corn mill is still very much alive. The mill is in motion almost every day, and at the bottom of the mill there is a cozy mill shop where the home-made artisanal mill products such as flour, bread and baking mixes are in great demand. ‘Assie draait, issie open’ is the slogan of the miller! Brief history This round stone tower mill was built in 1838 for Willem and Reinier Ambrosius, as a successor to a 16th century wooden post mill. A map from 1798 shows that it stood on the same spot. The mill was built by master carpenter and millwright T.C. Snels from Waalwijk and mason J. Verkuijl from Veen, for the sum of eight thousand guilders and was equipped with two pairs of millstones. The construction took only thirteen weeks, and the stones for the hull were transported by barge over the Maas. In 1924, the Ambrosius miller family emigrated to South Africa and the mill came into the hands of the Van Ballegooijen family, who continued the business. Want to know more?
