Vossenberg Fortress is situated on a sand ridge in the Groote Peel nature reserve. Built in 1939 as the threat of war from Germany intensified, the fortress consists of six casemates (now national monuments) and was part of the Peel-Raam fortification system. It remained unused during the German invasion of 1940. Heavy fighting took place in the surrounding marshy terrain in the autumn of 1944. St. Barbara's Church was built in 1895 to a design by Jac. van Groenendael Jr. The church building, built in the traditionalist style, is a national monument and of cultural-historical significance. It serves as an example of spiritual and typological development in the architecture of Roman Catholic churches in the second half of the 19th century. The church has an urban developmental function due to its special significance for the appearance of Griendtsveen, particularly as the core of the religious ensemble on Helenaveenseweg. Finally, the church is of general importance due to the architectural integrity of its exterior and its rarity in terms of cultural and architectural history. In the cemetery of St. Barbara's Church, you will find the grave of regional novelist Toon Kortooms. At his express wish, the writer was buried in the Peel region, his beloved.

Beautiful church! Roman Catholic and that was nice because my grandparents found it annoying that there was also a Protestant church in the neighboring village of Helenaveen (they were not allowed to go to the fair there).

6월 11, 2025, Oostenwind Windmill (Asten)
Based on an inscription on this mill, it has often been claimed that it was built in 1506. Some sources indicate that a mill must have stood here as early as 1419. However, after extensive research, standard mill experts have determined that this mill dates back to the 18th century. Was this standard mill rebuilt in the 18th century as a successor to a much older mill? On May 17, 1771, Asten and the mill were struck by extreme weather, and the mill was overturned. In 1779, just eight years later, the mill was again severely damaged by the storm. The mill belonged to the Lords of Asten for a long time—until the middle of the 20th century. In 1953, the mill was sold to the Van Stekelenburg family. Major renovations were carried out in 1961. On the night of June 15-16, 1970, this mill fell victim to a fire, but remained standing, albeit severely damaged.

Construction of the present (moated) castle began around 1325. It served as a replacement for an older castle (known as 't Oude Huys), which stood a few hundred meters west of the present castle and from which the foundations of a stone keep and other objects were found during excavations in 1981.

The Soemeersingel in the Mariapeel is a beautiful route along wet grasslands and peat bogs that offer a unique view of this special nature reserve. Here you walk along narrow waterways and open fields, with the chance to spot special birds such as the bluethroat or snipe along the way. The surrounding landscape of the Verheven Peel adds an extra dimension with its vast heathland and peat lakes.

Beautiful piece along a drainage. Definitely include in a MTB or gravel bike ride. Path is narrow and easy to walk

Nice double track over Galgenberg. It is straight so it is also easy to do with a gravel bike. If you don't want too much single track, this is a good and nice alternative
