Nemerlaer Castle is situated on the edge of the Beerze stream valley, between Oisterwijk and Haaren. The castle is one of the oldest in North Brabant and was mentioned in historical sources as early as the 14th century. The name Nemerlaer supposedly refers to "no one's forest" or "no one's land," indicating that the area was once a free and undeveloped landscape. The original castle originated as a fortified house that served to protect the surrounding land and trade routes. Over the centuries, the building was expanded and modified several times. The current appearance of the castle, with its towers, moat, and surrounding park, is the result of various renovations, primarily in the 16th and 17th centuries. During the Eighty Years' War and subsequent conflicts, the castle was damaged but was repeatedly repaired. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the estate increasingly took on the character of a country estate with a park and avenues. Today, Nemerlaer Castle is a cultural and historical center that regularly hosts exhibitions, lectures, and cultural events. The estate surrounding the castle offers a peaceful walking area with mature trees, avenues, and views of the Beerze valley, bringing history and nature into close proximity.

In Helvoirt, the Van Gogh family had connections with the noble De Jonge van Zwijnsbergen family, a prominent family closely involved in the Protestant community. Joan de Jonge van Zwijnsbergen (1821-1881) lived in Zwijnsbergen Castle, which evolved from a farm in the late Middle Ages into a castle in the eighteenth century.

The Scheut Fathers (Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus) were missionaries based at Sparrendaal. Deceased members of that congregation were buried here, including Brother Pieter Hordijk (born 1938–died 1971); his grave is still clearly marked by a stone with a cross.

In the Belgian Scheut, the Flemish priest Theophiel Verbist founded the Missionaries of Scheut in 1862. In 1899, these missionaries were given ‘Oud Sparrendaal’ and 38 hectares of land as a gift. They set up the mission house Sint Franciscus Xaverius there, with the aim of recruiting more Dutch people for missionary work. They started giving lessons and courses. In 1929, the growing brotherhood built a new complex with a chapel ‘Nieuw Sparrendaal’ right next to the old country house. A minor seminary with boarding school for boys who wanted to become missionaries. In 2008, the last missionaries left Sparrendaal. They went to a nursing home in Teteringen. Nieuw-Sparrendaal was demolished in 2009 to make way for two country houses. The old beech avenue was restored. Remains of the monastery’s history include the cemetery and a small Marian chapel.
