In the Belgian Scheut, the Flemish priest Theophiel Verbist founded the Missionaries of Scheut in 1862. In 1899, these missionaries were given ‘Oud Sparrendaal’ and 38 hectares of land as a gift. They set up the mission house Sint Franciscus Xaverius there, with the aim of recruiting more Dutch people for missionary work. They started giving lessons and courses. In 1929, the growing brotherhood built a new complex with a chapel ‘Nieuw Sparrendaal’ right next to the old country house. A minor seminary with boarding school for boys who wanted to become missionaries. In 2008, the last missionaries left Sparrendaal. They went to a nursing home in Teteringen. Nieuw-Sparrendaal was demolished in 2009 to make way for two country houses. The old beech avenue was restored. Remains of the monastery’s history include the cemetery and a small Marian chapel.

Two nature toilets were opened in Vught on 5 June 2024. These public toilet facilities are located in the Brabant nature reserves of the IJzeren Man and the Kapellebos. The compost toilets are part of the project ‘When Nature Calls’, a joint initiative of the Maag Lever Darm Stichting (MLDS) and Natuurmonumenten, with support from the National Postcode Lottery.
