The Schoten - Dessel Canal was dug in the period 1844 - 1846. In this way, the Noorderkempen could be supplied with calcareous water. The Noorderkempen was also accessible by inland shipping. Along the bank, the towpath, where we can now cycle recreationally, was provided for ship towing. Ship towing is a terminology in inland shipping. This heavy work was carried out by man or animal. The perfect combination was the horse and the donkey. To make the hard labour more bearable, trees were planted to provide shade strips above the towpath. There are no longer trees on the towpath here, but nothing prevents us from enjoying the peace and quiet on the waterfront.
