Historic cemetery of the very suggestive workers' village, certainly worth a visit

Crespi d'Adda was an "Ideal Work Village" created by the industrial Crespi family in the late nineteenth century along the Adda for the workers of their textile factory. It offered employees homes, services and protection “from the cradle to the grave.” Only those who worked in the factory could live there. UNESCO has recognized it as a World Heritage Site for being an exceptional and well-preserved example of a Southern European workers' village.

The Alessandro Taccani hydroelectric power plant is a work of architectural art located in Trezzo sull'Adda, along the right bank of the Adda river. Founded by industrialist Cristoforo Benigno Crespi, the plant has been generating clean and sustainable energy for over a century. Every year, it produces around 60 million kilowatt hours, equivalent to the average annual consumption of 24 thousand families. Behind her, the medieval castle of Trezzo, with its 42 meter high square tower towering above it.

The hydroelectric power plant has the purpose of obtaining the production of electricity from moving masses of water. The energy produced by hydroelectric plants is to be classified in all respects as renewable energy as water can be reused over and over again for the same purpose. The functioning of the A. Taccani Hydroelectric Plant - 1906, shown in the photos, is guaranteed through the creation of an artificial basin, regulated by towpaths. Unlike the "run-of-the-river power plants", an artificial lake is created by blocking a river gorge with a dam, from which the pipes that carry the water to the turbines then depart.

To be precise, the hydroelectric plant is called TACCANI (Treccani is the encyclopaedia) from the name of the designer. Alessandro Taccani (1876-1947) was a young graduate in industrial engineering from the Istituto Tecnico Superiore in Milan, when Cristoforo Benigno Crespi involved him to build his hydroelectric plant along the Adda. A great officer and knight of labour, the engineer Taccani was president of the consortium for the alienation of electrical materials left over from the war (1920-1924) and was commissioner for Italy at the Basel exhibition (1926). Taccani disappeared on 8 July 1947 at the Gavazzeni clinic in Bergamo.

5월 2, 2022, Cimitero Monumentale di Crespi d’Adda
The cemetery designed by Gaetano Moretti has a rectangular planimetric shape and is located south of the village near the confluence of the Brembo with the Adda, reachable through an artery over 300 meters long, continuing the main avenue. The complex is set in an agricultural environment of cultivated countryside: the whole plot to the right of the avenue and the cemetery, now uncultivated undergrowth, was once cultivated with vineyards and orchards while on the opposite side there was cereal cultivation. The entrance takes place by means of a wrought iron gate positioned centrally on the north side, right in front of a majestic pyramid-shaped funeral monument that forms the backdrop of the cemetery. The Crespi mausoleum consists of three galleries, a central staircase and an altar dedicated to the SS. Redeemer and to Saints Onorato and Simplicio; in it the space was prepared for fifty burials and it is the only property that remains today the property of its founders (the rest of the cemetery would be passed on January 1, 1931 to the company S.T.I. - Italian Textile Establishments - which will sell it in 1965 to the Municipality of Capriate San Gervasio).

The main street runs between the factory and the village, up to the cemetery, a national monument. Inside is the Crespi chapel: a majestic tower-pyramid in log and concrete, decorated, which stands on the graves of the workers, small crosses arranged in an orderly manner in the English lawn. In addition to being at the forefront of infrastructural equipment and services, important technological innovations were also introduced in this small city, such as electric lighting with the Edison system to improve both production efficiency and the quality of life of workers and employees.

10월 31, 2021, Trail Along the Adda River
Beautiful stretch on the banks of the Adda river, very wild but fun. We recommend the use of a mtb, it is also feasible with gravel bikes, but on certain descents you have to pay a lot of attention. In addition, in many points it runs along the river current, so during periods of flood it is strongly not recommended to transit as it is an area that is not very busy.
