beautiful valley and very welcoming refuge

The rifugio is run by the local Antonioli family, who have been active in this part of the Camonica Valley for generations and still produce traditional products – cheeses, meats, and simple dishes – that are served to guests. In summer, the rifugio offers accommodations in multi-person rooms and home-cooked meals, while in winter it is open on selected weekends.

Rifugio Antonioli is located in the Mortirolo Pass region in Lombardy, at an altitude of approximately 1,750 meters above sea level, near the mountain lake Mortirolo. Formerly a malga, or shepherd's hut, used for grazing and cheesemaking in the summer. In 2010, the building was renovated and converted into a mountain hut, preserving the simple, stone and wood character typical of Alpine pastures.

Within a few meters there are several important historical buildings and monuments, including: an early Christian church with a baptismal font that testifies to the beginnings of the spread of Christianity in Valtellina; noble buildings of the main families of the area; a monument to the fallen of the war... The historic climb of Mortirolo also starts from Mazzo, even if it was recently decided to keep this road closed for safety reasons, and nearby there are several castles connected by the "sentiero dei castelli" path. In essence, it is worth stopping in this square and, if possible, visiting churches and buildings.

Right on the paved road at the intersection with the Five Crazy Down - Schiazzera trail is this eagle beak-shaped rock with prehistoric man carvings. It is likely that other similar rocks exist in the entire area but few have been discovered.
