Spacious and beautiful church with the impressive medieval bell tower.

Tirano is a small Italian town at the entrance to the Veltins mountain range near the Swiss border and is known as the terminus of the Bernina Express, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town is home to the Madonna di Tirano pilgrimage church, a stunning 16th-century basilica. Tirano boasts a picturesque old town with stately homes, a medieval city wall, and is a center for local culinary delights and wine tastings.

The church belongs to the ecclesiastical region of Lombardy, the Diocese of Como, and is dedicated to Saint Martin, who is also the patron saint of the city of Tirano. The present church largely dates back to the mid-17th century, when it was completely rebuilt under Provost Rinaldi. Only a few parts of the previous buildings remained in use. The current exterior facade of the church dates from 1870, when Provost Albonico commissioned the architect Carlo Maciachini to create it. The frescoes in the pronaos were executed by Giovanni Gavazzeni at the end of the 19th century. The dome and apse were added in 1914. The north facade has a strictly structured Gothic portal with a round window and a temple-like structure. In 1953, the new rectory was built and the old one demolished. The bell tower in the Romanesque-Lombard style probably dates back to the previous building (1479?). The tower has several sound holes, with increasing open spaces toward the top.
