The terminus of the Bernina Line. You can also reach it without the Bernina Express by regular regional train. Or by bus from Samedan or Pontresina to La Prese and then change to the regional train for the rest of the journey.

Built at the end of the fifteenth century by order of Ludovico il Moro, it was the main fortification of Tirano and is located in a strategic position to defend the city from the invasion of the Grisons from Switzerland. It was the highest point of the walls of Tirano and like practically all the other castles of Valtellina it was destroyed in 1526 and never rebuilt. It is called the castle of Santa Maria because in the Middle Ages there was a small church dedicated to Mary in that very area.

Right on the paved road at the intersection with the Five Crazy Down - Schiazzera trail is this eagle beak-shaped rock with prehistoric man carvings. It is likely that other similar rocks exist in the entire area but few have been discovered.
