Built in the Zampetta area, the high fort served as protection to the south (road from Rovereto) and to the east (Valsorda-Fricca-Valsugana road). Built on three levels, it is surrounded by a deep moat bordered by a stone wall equipped with a caponier for riflemen. The fort is currently in a state of serious disrepair, as indicated by the sign at the entrance: BE CAREFUL!

Spectacular testimony to the presence of a massive defensive line, 30 km long, established by the Austro-Hungarian empire before 1914, which consists of seven fortifications.

Castel Beseno stands in a highly strategic position: a high hill along the Vallagarina, at the entrance to the Rio Cavallo Valley; it essentially controlled the communication routes between the Germanic area and the Italian peninsula, both from the Trento and Folgaria sides. Of medieval origin (12th century), it was expanded and modernized over the centuries. In particular, during the 16th century, it was rebuilt and renovated, transforming its appearance from a medieval castle to that of a Renaissance residence, while retaining its identity as a well-armed defensive fortress. Beseno Castle, near Rovereto, is the largest feudal fortification in Trentino. It is well worth a visit. The view of the Etsch Valley is magnificent.
