12월 13, 2024, Croce del Sojo (Monte Soglio)
Monte Sojo (in the Vicenza dialect) or Soglio (in Italian) is a large rocky spur 700m above sea level. The summit offers a wide panorama of the Alto Vicentino, the Pedemontana, the entrance to the Val Leogra and the Piccole Dolomiti that surround it: Pasubio, Novegno and Summano. Precisely because of its dominant position and the view it offers, during the First World War it was integrated into the defensive line of Ortogonale 1: after the offensive of 1916, when the danger of an Austro-Hungarian advance towards the plain became concrete, it became a stronghold with numerous loopholes, observation posts and positions for light weapons dug into the rock.

The summit of Civillina is wide, grassy and very panoramic with a wide view of the Vicenza and Trentino Prealps, today unfortunately covered by clouds and mist. There are also numerous trenches and other very well preserved or recovered war artefacts. Finally, congratulations for the comprehensive explanations posted on numerous information panels along the entire itinerary.

The climb to Monte Summano is always beautiful and interesting and being exposed to the south it can be done practically all year round. From the top there are trails that vary in difficulty and beauty but are always fun and exciting.

Slightly challenging climb, more from the Valdagno side where the slope is more noticeable, however nothing impossible

Excellent place to cool off after an excursion, several paths start from there, there is no shortage of parking next to the restaurant.

Mount Summano is a mountain of great historical, natural, and scenic interest. It is the last offshoot of the Monte Novegno chain overlooking the plain: from the summit, you can enjoy a beautiful 360° panorama of the Po Valley on one side and the Astico Valley and the Venetian Prealps on the other. It has never been a volcano, despite some misconceptions based on its conical shape (which, however, is only apparent from the southern perspective, i.e., from the plain). The toponym perhaps derives from the god Summanus, the god of thunder and nocturnal atmospheric phenomena (as opposed to Jupiter, god of daytime thunder). It has always been a sacred place and a destination for pilgrimages: from ancient pagan cults in the Etruscan and Roman eras (as evidenced by archaeological finds) to its crystallization with the Sanctuary of the Gerolimini Friars, beneath the summit. During World War I, it was militarized due to its remote yet strategic location, serving as a second line of defense in the event of an enemy breakthrough. Traces of two anti-aircraft emplacements remain on the summit; cave shelters are present in various secluded spots; the eastern (Rancina) and western (Creste all the way to Brazome) ridges are dotted with observation posts and artillery emplacements. It boasts a unique and rare floral biodiversity, undoubtedly due to its location and shape; according to belief, also due to the fact that this hill has been a pilgrimage site since ancient times; traditionally, every traveler brought flowers from their homeland as a gift to the mountain. At the summit, an imposing 16-meter concrete cross stands with a steel Christ in a somewhat unusual pose, with his hand raised: it represents the moment of resurrection, but it also seems to be a greeting and a wish for the hiker who has made it this far! https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monte_Summano

At the summit, there is a remarkable panoramic view that extends from Carega to Pasubio, from Novegno to the Asiago Plateau and the Grappa Group. Precisely because of its strategic position, straddling the Agno and Leogra Valleys, during World War I, Mount Civillina was an important Italian stronghold on the last line of resistance, at the intersection of Orthogonale 1 and Orthogonale 2, to block a possible enemy breakthrough from Pasubio. It was never directly involved in the conflict, but throughout the surrounding area, military structures such as defense trenches, artillery emplacements, cave shelters, a powder magazine, the mule track ascending from Sentinello, and the military road accessible to trucks are still visible and recovered. Mount Civillina has also been, for centuries, since the Middle Ages, one of the most important mining centers in the Vicenza area, extracting iron, silver, magnesium, kaolin, and much more. https://www.montagnando.it/art/cdz/monte-civillina/

Direct climb of the entire Monte Summano, from the foot to the cross, taking all the shortcuts that skip the hairpin bends of the classic Via Crucis, with wonderful and wide panoramic points on the plain below, on the edge of the slope. 1000mD+ in 3.2km: definitely challenging, definitely EE for the steep climb, the exposed sections, the stony ground and the climbing between the rocks. Every summer a race was held there, hence the nice play on words in the name that combines track with 'straco', meaning tired in Venetian dialect: MAISTRACK = NEVER TIRED! :D https://www.facebook.com/maistrackVK/?locale=it_IT
