The Elbe cycle path leads along here with a few meters of altitude. It is unpaved and very winding, so you might have to push it at times.

The bike path on the former Marschlandbahn is the fastest, traffic light-free and most comfortable way from Geesthacht to downtown Hamburg (or vice versa). In good weather there is a lot of activity on the weekend, which then slows down the pace accordingly.

In the comments, the assessments of the navigability differ somewhat. The photos also show sections that run along the shore or lead down to the water. The path at the campsite is also very narrow and partly muddy. So my tip: If you follow the signs for the Elbe Cycle Path, you will be led onto a road about halfway above the water (can also be seen on many photos).

The windmill in Artlenburg is a real eye-catcher and always a nice photo opportunity for me when I pass here on my bike tours. The mill is not far from the mouth of the Elbe Lateral Canal into the Elbe.

The barrage regulates the fairway of the Upper Elbe with the entrances to the Elbe-Lübeck Canal and the Elbe Lateral Canal, and between Hamburg and Cuxhaven for an even Elbe depth of 12 meters.

A very nice place from where you can enjoy the hustle and bustle on the Elbe.

The straight and smooth cycle path on the Altengammer Marschbahndamm between Altengamme and the Besenhorster Sandberge is a good car-free alternative route to Altengammer Hausdeich. The approx. 33 km long marshland embankment is now a popular cycling and hiking trail through the meadows and fields of the Vier- und Marschlande. The former line of the Kleinbahn was opened in 1921 with a first section, with the line from the branch of the main line of the Bergedorf-Geesthacht Railway via Teufelsort to the branch of the line coming from Bergedorf towards the south, which was built in 1912, to the Zollenspieker terminus. The other sections of the route followed until 1927, the last section of the route via Fünfhausen, Ochsenwerder, Tatenburg to Moorfleet was finished. In 1952 the rail traffic was stopped again and the tracks have been almost completely removed. Today the marshland embankment is almost completely tarred and an ideal bike path.
