With a usable length of 250 meters and a width of 25 meters, the Geesthacht lock was built in 1957 to ensure an even draft between the Lower and Upper Elbe. So that the larger ships can pass between the Lower and Upper Elbe, the Lower Elbe was dredged to a depth of 12 meters. However, the water level of the Upper Elbe was not allowed to become too shallow and the groundwater level of the Elbmarsch was not allowed to drop.
Since then, the lock with the lock channel has made it possible for shipping to overcome the gradient created by the weir. The barrage raises the Elbe level up to two meters above the previous mean water level. From here and the Elbe bridge you have excellent views of the busy shipping traffic and the impressive technology of the lock. Not far from the lock is the barrage with the largest fish pass in Europe. Here, too, you have a good overview from the Elbe bridge.
