With a useful length of 250 meters and a width of 25 meters, the Geesthacht lock was built in 1957 to ensure an even draft between the lower and upper Elbe. So that the larger ships can pass between the Lower and Upper Elbe, the Lower Elbe was dredged to a water depth of 12 metres. However, the water level of the Upper Elbe must not become too shallow and the groundwater level of the Elbmarsch must not sink.
Since then, the lock with the lock canal has enabled shipping to overcome the gradient created by the weir. The barrage raises the Elbe level up to two meters above the previous average water level.
From the Elbe bridge you have an excellent view of the lively shipping traffic and the impressive technology of the lock. Not far from the lock is the barrage with the largest fish ladder in Europe. Here, too, you have a good overview from the Elbe bridge.

The barrage of Geesthacht is impressive. There is an old fish ladder on the southern bank of the Elbe, but it was not suitable for larger fish. As an ecological compensation measure for the Moorburg power plant, in 2010 Vattenfall built Europe's largest fish ladder on the north side, next to the lock. This is very successful and it is hoped that the Atlantic sturgeon, along with salmon and eel, will be able to settle in the Elbe again.

The weir also serves to regulate the river. The tides are effective up to here, but no longer in the upper reaches.

The barrage in Geesthacht consists of a weir, a lock, and two fish ladders.
It is the only weir in the German part of the Elbe. It was designed to counteract increasing erosion in the middle Elbe region and improve both navigability on the
Upper Elbe and the landscape conditions above the barrage. The Lower Elbe was deepened several times to accommodate seagoing vessels traveling to Hamburg. The Geesthacht pumped-storage power plant is located upstream of the barrage
and uses the Elbe as a lower reservoir. A hydroelectric power plant planned next to the weir
has not yet been built because economical power generation was not feasible at the required lower reservoir heights.
The sector weir, commissioned in 1960, has four openings, each 50 meters wide.
Sector gate valves control the water discharge. These hydrodynamically shaped hollow steel bodies are sunk into chambers in the weir foundation to allow more water to flow away, or raised to maintain the dam height of 4.00 meters. Ships pass through the weir via a lock with two parallel chambers. Two fishways increase the permeability for aquatic life: The one built in 1998 is 216 meters long; the more sophisticated fishway built in 2010 on the north bank is 550 meters long.

The Federal Transport Minister kept his word and inaugurated the Elbe Bridge on September 14, 1966 with 8,000 citizens. Actually, one has to speak of two bridges here, because one bridge crosses the lock canal and the other the Elbe. Everyone was looking forward to this day, including local historian Theodor Nissen: "You can walk from Hachede to Hachede again," a reference to the roots of Geesthacht and Marschacht. It was a big day for Geesthacht at the time, because the city was celebrating its 750th birthday at the same time. The Elbe bridge was planned as part of the construction of the Elbe barrage. However, the barrage was already put into operation in 1958. The Elbe bridge was an important economic policy measure for Geesthacht. This bridge was intended to create a connection to the B5 (Hamburg-Lauenburg-Berlin) and the B4 (Hamburg-Lüneburg-Brunswick). This new road layout was intended to relieve the Hamburg Elbe bridges and make the areas on both sides of the Elbe more accessible to traffic. Since the route to Lower Saxony was now short and the area of the former Düneberg factory could be developed in the Geesthacht area, this bridging promised jobs.
Even as the bridge was being built, thousands made the pilgrimage to the Elbe and entered the working bridge (weir service bridge) at the weir. From the summer of 1964, even cars were allowed to cross this temporary bridge.
The bridge had bad consequences for the two ferry companies, the Rick family in Krümmel and the Feltig family in Geesthacht, and they had to stop ferry operations. Geesthacht's ferryman, Ernst Feltig, wanted to continue, but he too shut down operations on December 31, 1966.
The bridging has a long history. The people of Geesthacht have been waiting for this day since the 1920s.
