Goldbergsee, a 145-hectare reservoir located between the districts of Neuses and Beiersdorf, is one of Coburg's most popular recreational areas. Originally conceived as a flood control basin, the lake has long since become a favorite destination for walks, hikes, bike rides, and relaxing breaks in nature. In the idyllic surroundings of Coburg, you'll enjoy beautiful views of the majestic Callenberg Castle, perched high on a hill overlooking the lake, and the Glender Wiesen bird sanctuary. Also worth a visit is the Rückerthaus, where the famous poet Friedrich Rückert once spent many happy hours. A highlight for hiking enthusiasts is the 14-kilometer "Coburg Sea" circular trail, which runs along Goldbergsee and offers breathtaking natural scenery. Our district office in Heldburg is also worth seeing – a building steeped in forestry history. The castle pond, together with the adjacent castle and the church, forms a remarkable ensemble.

The Renaissance-style castle has rounded corner towers at the front. In the small courtyard, there is an octagonal stair tower with a spiral staircase, the steps of which are not attached to a pillar as usual, but rather to a spindle carved into the stone. This construction has often been called the 9th Wonder of the World. The castle is privately owned and not open to the public. To the left, directly adjacent to the castle, is a manor house with outbuildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. This includes the Manor Sheep Farm, a Baroque structure dating from 1713, which houses the Coburg Equipment Museum, just under a kilometer away. To the east of the castle is the castle church, which was developed from a Gothic castle chapel and features two magnificent epitaphs of the Lords of Streitberg. The Old Sheep Farm Ahorn is located amidst the diverse cultural landscape of the Coburg region. It houses the Coburg Region's Equipment Museum with its 600 square meters of exhibition space. A large barn, shepherd's house, bakehouse, and pigpen are grouped around the 300-year-old sheepfold, which serves as the central exhibition building. This beautifully designed seating area, created by wood sculptor Max Müller, is located on Burgstrasse, right next to the Victoria Rondell at the beginning of the footpath to the fortress, and is part of the children's play area. Beautifully designed and decorated with carvings, the space is not only an eye-catcher but also invites you to linger for a while.
