The Glender Wiesen Bird Sanctuary has existed since 1989. It is one of the few remaining large wetland areas in Upper Franconia. With the construction of the Goldbergsee reservoir in 2010, a flood control project for the city of Coburg, large parts of the nature reserve were flooded. In addition to the biotope lake within the nature reserve, the Grundsee lake was created south of the railway line. New habitats, especially for wading birds and waterfowl, have since developed. The northern part of the Grundsee, like the nature reserve itself, is also an EU Special Protection Area for birds. The Glender Wiesen area is now one of the most important meadow bird breeding grounds in Upper Franconia.
