Events regularly take place on the Castle Square in front of the military academy. History: The Kasteelplein was closely connected to Breda Castle, the former ancestral seat of the Nassaus where the Royal Military Academy is now located. Fights around the castle often took place here. In Alva's time, Castle Square was an execution site. Protestants tried by the Inquisition (the Blood Council) were martyred here and publicly burned.

Where land defenders are trained. History: Breda Castle was once the ancestral seat of the Nassaus, the ancestors of our Royal family. Due to the important international role of the Nassaus, the Castle was an important place in Europe in the 15th to 17th centuries. Long history Breda Castle has a long history. As early as 1198, there was a castle on the site of the current castle. The castle came into the hands of the Nassau in the early 15th century through the marriage of the German Count Engelbrecht of Nassau with Johanna van Polanen from Breda. Over the centuries, the castle has been demolished and built almost continuously. From Renaissance Palace to KMA In the sixteenth century, Count Henry III of Nassau had the castle rigorously converted into a Renaissance palace. For this purpose he brought Thomas Vincidor de Bologna, a student of Raphael, to Breda. With the arrival of the Royal Military Academy in 1826, the castle was again sobered and many of the Renaissance ornaments disappeared. Guided tours Because the Castle is located on military grounds, it can only be visited to a very limited extent. Gilde de Baronie regularly gives guided tours of the grounds. Interested in a tour? The mausoleum of Engelbrecht II of Nassau and his wife Cimburga of Baden is located in the Prinsenkapel of the Church of Our Lady in Breda. The mausoleum, erected after 1530 by Count Henry III of Nassau, consists of a: black marble tomb with the count lying in a natural position on their death bed, the two statues of the deceased, four kneeling figures made of alabaster, cover plate with the count's equipment, also made of black. Belgian marble and alabaster. The crypt contains all of Breda's Nassaus up to William of Orange, including the first Prince of Orange, René de Chalon. William of Orange, who was murdered in Delft in 1584, had also reserved his final resting place in the Grote Kerk, but when he was shot, Breda was in Spanish hands. Willem was buried in Delft and after him almost all Oranje-Nassaus. His first wife, Anna van Buren, and their daughter are buried here in the crypt. Info about burial vault: There was a hollow space under this mausoleum. The floor was broken up in 1937 and a burial vault was (re)discovered. This cellar was known from literature and the will of William of Orange.

Park Valkenberg is the green oasis in the city center of Breda. A park with royal allure where, until the early nineteenth century, only the castle residents and their guests were welcome. Nowadays it is a wonderful meeting place. Students look for the sun or the shade of the centuries-old trees. Fathers and mothers let their offspring play in the playground while they sit on the terrace of the T-House. Even the geese feel at home there. Falconry The park owes its name to a falcon house that stood on the edge and from which the castle residents and their guests practiced falconry. Live music regularly plays in the park.

The 15th century Grote or Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kerk is the pride of Breda. Originally Catholic, but reformed since the iconoclasm. In the fifteenth century, Count Engelbrecht of Nassau ordered the church to be built, including a burial vault for his family. Nine Nassaus and the first Prince of Orange found their final resting place there. Inside and outside Not only the imposing architecture of the outside, but also the monuments in the church and the vaults and murals make the Grote Kerk the most important monument in Breda. Henry III of Nassau in particular contributed a lot to this. He and his wife Mencia de Mendoza brought Renaissance art to Breda. The Prinsenkapel with its gold-leaf-covered ceiling is very special. The ancestors of our Royal House are buried here. The Largest Museum in the Netherlands Because of its valuable art treasures, the Grote Kerk has been included in 'The Largest Museum in the Netherlands', an initiative of the Catharijne Convent in Utrecht. In 'The Largest Museum' there is an audio tour with which you can wander through the church yourself. Six centuries of Nassaus and the Grote Kerk The bond between the Grote Kerk and the Nassaus is explained through ten media players. The exhibition provides in-depth information about the Nassaus and the monuments and paintings that make the church interior so interesting. The Kooromgang highlights the significance that the Breda Nassaus had for architecture, painting, sculpture, medieval manuscripts, tapestry and glass painting. The Grote Kerk is accessible free of charge for at least eight months a year. A free donation for maintenance and restoration is of course always welcome. An entrance fee may apply during exhibitions or events. Discover everything at https://www.welkominbreda.nl/nl/locations/450215437/grote-kerk-breda

The first Breda Castle was built on this site in the twelfth century. The castle, which has been extensively renovated since then, played an important role in Dutch history. Until the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648), the castle was home to the royal family of Orange-Nassau, with William of Orange as its most famous resident. In 1828, the Royal Military Academy opened its doors here, which has been part of the Dutch Defence Academy since 2005. Source: information board at the entrance to the Royal Military Academy

Info about burial vault: There was a hollow space under this mausoleum. The floor was broken up in 1937 and a burial vault was (re)discovered. This cellar was known from literature and the will of William of Orange. In this crypt there were four lead coffins, three large and one small, on iron trestles. In one of the coffins on which 1538 Henri III Comte de Nassav stood, lay the embalmed body of Henry III, wrapped in linen cloths. The skeleton of René of Chalon, son of Henry III, was found in the other coffin. The collarbone of the two-meter-long body was shattered and the bones around it were also badly damaged. Réne van Chalon died at the age of 25 during a battle from an arterial hemorrhage as a result of a grenade explosion. His heart and intestines rest in the chapel of Bar-le-Duc. On the coffin stood a lead drum containing the remains of Mary, a daughter of René of Châlon and Anna of Lorraine who died in the cradle. Anna van Buren, the first wife of William of Orange, was buried in the third coffin. In the smallest coffin lay their youngest daughter Maria. She died when she was one year old. There was also a barrel with embalmed intestines. The barrel stood next to Anna van Buren's coffin. The remains were placed in new bronze coffins and the crypt was carefully closed again with a keystone. Actually, William of Orange should also have been buried in this crypt. He died after an assassination attempt in Delft in 1584. Because Breda was then in Spanish hands and could not be reached from Delft, his coffin was placed in the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft. He was later given a place there in a new burial vault of Orange-Nassau. Since then, it has been the final resting place for members of the House of Orange and the Royal House. In the presence of Queen Wilhelmina, who has always taken care of the graves of her ancestors, the cellar was closed again on September 14, 1938. The new keystone contains the following text: KEYSTONE OF THE CELLAR OF THE LAST MEMBERS OF THE SEX VAN NASSAU AND ORANGE-NASSAU WHO WERE INTERIED IN BREDA. Below are the names and dates of death of the four interred Nassaus.
