10月 20, 2025, Ehemaliger Gutshof Wendisch Lieps
The estate, including the school building for the surrounding villages, stood here. In 1963, the entire area was demolished during the "Verziefer" (pesticide) campaign, and all the buildings were destroyed because it was considered too close to the border by the GDR regime.

If you want to know more about the museum and the horrendous events surrounding the "execution" of Michael Gartenschläger during the GDR era for dismantling automatic shooting devices, you can find them in my book https://shop.tredition.com/booktitle/Zwei_R%3fder_ein_Land/W-1_136034, on the cover of which I can be seen in front of the museum.

11月 12, 2022, Bretziner Heide Nature Reserve
The Bretziner Heide nature reserve is a 32 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, eight kilometers northeast of Boizenburg. It is one of the last dry dwarf shrub heaths in West Mecklenburg. It was declared a protected area on April 16, 1974. The area is in good condition, as the invasion of woody plants has been slowed down by ploughing and sheep grazing. Surrounding towns are Bretzin, which gives the area its name, not far to the south, and Wiebendorf. The nature reserve is located in the Mecklenburg Elbe Valley Nature Park. The areas can be walked on existing paths. There is a visitor parking lot in the southern area. http://www.traumziel-mv.de/wandern/touren-in-der-region/lewitz-mecklenburgisches-elbetal/tourendetails/bretziner-heide.html

To commemorate the division of Germany, an open-air border museum was set up at the outskirts of Leisterförde. Gate number 21 stood here until 1990 - one of the few passages in the "signal fence" that bypassed the last GDR village before the Iron Curtain and crossed the street. The gate could only be opened by members of the GDR border troops. Visitors can find out these and many other informative things about the border system on a tour. Among other things, about the border history, the border signal fence, the dog run, the observation tower, the border communication network (GMN), the tire killers, the column path, the control strip, the vehicle barrier ditch, the SM 70 splinter mine and the actual border fence.

At midnight between April 30 and May 1, 1976, Michael Gartenschläger was killed by East German border guards. He is shot by a Stasi special command when he tries to approach the border to the west. Gartenschläger has carefully planned its action on the Schwarzenbek border in Lauenburg. The GDR Foreign Minister, Oskar Fischer, denies that there are self-shot systems on the border. Gartenschläger wants to prove that this is a lie. In March and April he crawled to the border and dismantled two of the SM70 self-firing systems. He shows this to the magazine Der Spiegel and in this way the fraud of the GDR leadership was exposed. When gardeners know that a new SM70 has been installed, he sneaks back to the border on the evening of April 30th. Together with two helpers, he wants to fetch one of the new self-shot systems that are to be exhibited in West Germany. But he does not know that the East German border police got a tip. A special command of the Ministry of State Security can therefore take up posts. They are ready to shoot garden bats, which is now a thorn in the side of the GDR government. In the following years Michael Gartenschläger became a symbol of the inhumanity of the GDR. Shortly afterwards, a cross was erected in the village of Bröthen: the garden bat cross. Today there is a monument. www.vimu.info/fb.jsp?id=for_1_9_17_fb_gartenschlaeger_dk_doc&lang=de&u=general&flash=true

A very impressive memorial and memorial, where you should linger for a moment, think about it and make an active contribution in the future so that such terrible events are finally a thing of the past. Michael Gartenschläger approached the GDR border fence in order to dismantle one of the dangerous SM-70 splinter mines from the metal fence of the barrier systems. After he had twice succeeded in dismantling the murder devices denied by the GDR and presenting them as evidence to the western public, the third attempt ended fatally - Michael Gartenschläger was shot by snipers from the State Security Service, born on January 13, 1944 in Berlin Shot on April 30, 1976 Incident location: near border pillar 231, near Bröthen (Schleswig-Holstein) More detailed information: www.fu-berlin.de/sites/fsed/Das-DDR-Grenzregime/Biografien-von-Todesopfern/Gartenschlaeger_Michael/index.html

An interesting and informative small open-air museum, which is located directly on the street. You can get past it right away and take a little time to refresh the faded memories. In the open-air museum, parts of border security systems are shown as models, which can be viewed at any time. Until 1990 it stood on it Place "Tor 21" - one of the few passages in the "signal fence" that bypassed the last GDR village in front of the "iron curtain" and crossed the street here. The establishment of this open-air museum was part of the cross-border project “Border Experiences” between the schools in Wittenburg in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Büchen in Schleswig-Holstein in 2008. www.elbetal-mv.de/bb/POI_23_Leisterfoerde.pdf

Interesting and informative little open-air museum located right on the street. You pass it straight away and should take a little time to refresh the faded memories. Many years have now passed since the border was opened, but it wasn't actually that long ago and the times before and the events associated with them should not be forgotten.

Burial mounds from the Bronze Age characterize a heath landscape. Around the heathland are some oaks, reminiscent of a Hutewald. The surrounding oak birch forest merges into an alder forest to the east with several open water areas. Below the multi-stemmed "Hudebuche" runs a small stream. In such a small area you can gather a lot of different impressions. For me a highlight.

The complex shows the sequence of barriers that had to be overcome during an escape. From nail boards to shooting systems. However, there is a lack of spatial depth, so that the dimension that the “Iron Curtain” had is lost. Unfortunately, the weather also takes its toll on the materials. Since, as far as I know, the facility is maintained on a voluntary basis, this is not intended as a criticism. The system offers a good opportunity to imagine the division of Germany.
