In the Alpine region, the Großglockner High Alpine Road is certainly the most impressive. A constant increase of 10% over 1,300 vertical meters directs the ambitious friend of 2 tires on the highest mountain in Austria. Since you make many meters in a short time, a warm windbreaker is highly recommended. Also in the summer. One of the most exciting passes worldwide.

Of course, the high alpine road does NOT lead to the Gross Glockner. But you can pretty much turn in the middle on the glacier road and then up to the glacier tongue from the Glockner, up to the magnificent Kaiser Franz Josefs height.

Still quite pleasant to ride on the racing or mountain bike. With a lot of luggage it became extremely demanding!

One of the most beautiful mountain roads I know. Who does not shy away from the increase, will be rewarded with a magnificent view.

It's great, this high alpine road by bike
But the weather should also be good.
Unfortunately, we once had bad luck.
    A challenge with full luggage.
    2020 great weather.
No matter from which side, always try to start cycling as early as possible.
Perfect views, but sometimes annoying traffic.

Get up early and drive in the dark with a lamp is announced to avoid traffic. Otherwise it makes little fun and stinks. The road itself is one of the most beautiful mountain roads in the world.

Driven early in the morning on Mondays, little traffic until 10:00 a.m., no wind and super beautiful due to the fresh snow. Street was in great condition. Can be driven really well with a fairly constant gradient of 10-12%.
    Again and again 😊

Beautiful tour, especially immediately after the opening in May. Then you can drive between the 3-4m high snow walls.
Forget the Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Höhe !! The highest point of the route is on the Edelweißspitze at just under 2600 m. The last piece is on cobblestones. I advise you to drive through Großkirchheim (parking lot at the inn) and Apriach. Here a little-used village road runs until just before the toll booth. Great views because higher up !!

I drove with a friend in May 1996, the bad weather behind me. From Heiligenblut to Zell am See. Two days later the pass was closed due to snow.
It was cold up at the high gate. Closed snow cover next to the road. However, you should not wear the warm jacket, because it only goes downhill briefly and then uphill again, as can be seen in the beautiful picture to the highest point of the route.
Then great departure! Luckily, I had warm gloves with me! Did they ride with touring bikes and 4 panniers. Uphill pace 6-8 km / h. It took 15 minutes for 100 vertical meters. In the lower part I can remember the stench of the hot brakes of the cars coming towards us.
    Better start early!

Must be driven as a cyclist. Unfortunately a lot of traffic, but you have to hide it. Had great weather and no wind ...

Beautiful pass from south to north. If you set out early in the morning on weekdays, the traffic is still bearable. If there is enough time, it makes sense to spend the night at a campsite or a hut. The pass road is closed in the evening. Fantastic sunsets and sunrises.

For RR: toilet facility, trash can, benches for a short rest. For families: zoo, restoration and starting point for all kinds of hikes.
