    Year of construction: 1855

Architectural style: double cast iron drawbridge

    Architect: G.N. Itz

The Damiate Bridge over the mouth of the Wolwevershaven was built in the nineteenth century according to a design by the city architect G.N. Itz, who designed the majority of Dordrecht's bridges. Drawbridges were initially made of wood, but from 1837 cast iron was also used in the Netherlands. The bridge was originally made of easy-to-form cast iron and hammered iron. However, in the same year it had to be rebuilt because, two weeks after being put into use, one of the balances had collapsed. The use of different types of iron was still in its infancy and therefore the cast iron was replaced by wrought iron to ensure the bridge functioned properly. The bridge has a passage width of 14.5 meters.

The Damiate Bridge in Dordrecht is a historic cast-iron drawbridge dating from 1855, designed by city architect G.N. Itz. It spans the Wolwevershaven and has been a national monument since 1990. The bridge is still manually operated and is a popular photo spot in the old city center.
