Originally when the building was built in 1383, this was a market hall. It was only later, in 1544, that it became a town hall. Every first Sunday of the month you can visit the town hall and view the paintings and historical objects found inside.

The Town Hall of Dordrecht was first a market hall. It was built in 1383 for Flemish merchants who traded cloth there. In 1544, the city administrators moved into the building and it became the Town Hall. The square in front of the town hall was constructed in 1679. The building lost its medieval facade during a major renovation in the 19th century. That was when the Town Hall got its current facade and staircase with lions.

Above the columns of the City Hall you can see the city coat of arms of Dordrecht. It is held by two griffins, a cross between an eagle and a lion. The Town Hall was built in 1383 as a covered market hall and put into use as 'Stedehuys' in 1544.
