On Count Rottenhan's estate in Rotenhaus, he studied the local forestry and forest management system and was subsequently assigned to Schwarzenberg. In Schwarzenberg, Friedl found the forests in a completely neglected and desolate state. All districts were surveyed geometrically and maps were drawn up, and reforestation efforts were undertaken with great intensity. After the retirement of Forester Vogel, Friedl became Forester of the Schwarzenberg estate in 1787; only then did he have free rein to implement his ambitious plans and reforms.
