It was August 24, 1941, when a group of more than 50 Berlin anti-fascists, members of the KPD, social democrats and non-party members met in Gamengrund, not far from the municipality of Tiefensee, in strict secrecy.
The attack on the Soviet Union was only a few weeks ago. An assessment of the situation and the coordination of the resistance fight were necessary and the goal of the meeting in the Gamengrund.
One of the initiators of the meeting was Dr. Josef "Beppo" Römer. This had developed from the original organizer of a free corps, which was involved in the suppression of the Munich Soviet Republic, to a determined anti-fascist and close employee of the KPD, but was particularly hated by the fascists.
After the meeting, the anti-fascists increased their resistance to the Nazi regime. Many of the participants were arrested by treason in February 1942 and later sentenced by the fascist judiciary, many to death.
