Mariendom Neviges (Pilgrimage Church of Maria, Queen of Peace)

Architecturally very interesting with many details. Just planting such a monster in the small town was already a crime in the 60s. The outbuildings on the forecourt are the crowning glory.

When I saw St. Mary's Cathedral for the first time, I was shocked.
Such a large concrete block in the middle of the old town between the delicate half-timbered houses.
When I entered the very high and semi-dark room, I was pleasantly surprised by the simple interior.
The alternation between light and shadow creates a mysterious atmosphere.
I find the flowery mosaic windows that bring the sun into the interior particularly beautiful.

The Mariendom in the pilgrimage site of Neviges is one of the most important church buildings of the 20th century. The unique concrete folding structure with a free-polygonal floor plan spans a floor area of approx. 2,800 square meters and is a major work of the architect and Pritzker Prize winner Gottfried Böhm (*1920 † 2021). In 1968, Cardinal Frings celebrated the first Holy Mass in the Mariendom. Since 1995, it and its adjacent buildings have been listed as an ensemble. The concrete construction is reminiscent of the shape of tents pushed into one another, the tips of which are raised to peaks. The Mariendom gives the impression of an abstract monumental sculpture and shows Böhm's conception of architecture, which combines artistic form and memorable imagery.
