Nice old town. Lots of memories of Napoleon. The ice cream parlors far from the harbor are a poem.

The Medicei ramparts were ordered by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo I. After completing the construction of the field defenses of the Forte Falcone, the Forte Stella and the Torre della Linguella, towards 1555 Giovanni Camerini began the construction of the ramparts of the Front of Earth, developing them for about 500 meters in a westerly direction under Forte Falcone. Bernardo Buontalenti succeeded the death of Camerini in the direction of the works. Arranged on four levels (Bastione "del Veneziano", "of the Casino di Mezzo", "delle Palle", and "della Cornacchia") were a powerful defense against attacks that could have come from the "Porta a Terra", separated from the rest of the 'Island from a moat that went from the present Dock of the High Bottom to the Beach of the Ghiaie and that made of Portoferraio an island in the island. Between the Forts Falcone and Stella it was raised, to reinforce the natural defense constituted by the cliff overhanging the bastion of the Mills, so called after that two windmills were erected there. After the Forte Stella, in the direction of the Torre della Linguella, three other bastions were built: the Bastion "dei Pagliai", "del Maggiore" and "of San Cosimo. A large wall finally closed the whole town of Portoferraio on the side of the dock where , the only access was the Porta a Mare.
