      "The Virgins" / Beet girls in Sakskøbing

      Around 1900 a large group of Polish immigrants - mainly young women - came to Denmark to work here. For many it was work on the Lolland-Brach sugar beet fields and they were called "beetles".

      In 1940 Sakskøbing on Lolland erected the sculpture "The Virgins" by sculptor Gottfried Eickhoff to commemorate the Polish immigrants, who at that time had become largely respected and fully integrated members of society.
