The scrap tower was built in 1611 as a stair tower of a Renaissance house and raised by four storeys in the 19th century for the production of shotgun pellets. Today it is the landmark of the southern old town of Schweinfurt.

The building with the tower was built by Balthasar Rüffer III. (1569 - 1637) presumably from the year 1611. This can be deduced from the door jambs walled in today in the south wing with the initials B R (Balthasar Rüffer) and the year 1611, but also a painted overdoor of the property with the year 1614.
The south wing and part of the north wing as well as the striking tower are still preserved from the original building. The rest was destroyed in World War II.
