The Alfsee is only one part of the actual flood retention basin, namely the part that is operated in a permanent reservoir. There is also another reserve basin that has a through-flow and simply passes the water through during normal outflow. The official name of the HRB is Alfhausen-Rieste. The permanent storage capacity of the Alfsee is on average 3.1 million m³, it can hold a maximum of 12.7 million m³, only after which the reserve basin is filled with 8.1 million m³, which is otherwise a pure dry basin. Directly at the inlet of the Alfsee there is a small settling basin that has an overflow and where the sediment settles. This HRB is operated in a so-called bypass and is fed from the Hase via an artificial inlet. After the reserve basin there is the drain, which releases the water back into the Hase in a metered manner in the event of flooding.
