The entire reserve basin, including the dams, covers an area of 152.5 hectares, and the area within the dams that is protected is 123 hectares. The basin floor is at around 35.00 to 37.00 m above sea level, and the height of the dams, whose crest width is 4 m, is 43.75 m above sea level. The usable storage space is 8.1 million m³ at a height of 41.75 m above sea level.

The reserve basin is flowed through by the 1.15 km long culvert between the balancing and outlet structures. Around 30 m³ of water per second can be drained from the Alfsee via the culvert. The basin is only flooded during particularly large floods, when the 12.7 million m³ storage space of the main basin is exhausted and the water cannot be drained via the Hase.
