The Benedictine monastery Kitzingen was a powerful spiritual seat, to whose possessions not only the directly surrounding settlements belonged, but also Astheim, Köhler, Iphofen, Ochsenfurt and Gerbrunn. Until 1007 it was an imperial abbey, which was subordinate only to the ruler and whose abbesses made their oath exclusively to the pope. Not only the present Landratsamt, but also the Friedrich-Bernbeck-Schule and today's Evangelische Stadtkirche belong to the monastery complex. A sixteenth-century wooden panel picture suggests how much the complex has shaped the cityscape over the centuries. In the walls of the district office Kitzingen slumbers the old history of the place, which dates back to the Franconian period.
Here was the monastery Kitzingen, which according to legend founded by the Franconian princess Adeloga, daughter Karl Martells, consecrated in 745 by Boniface.
