The lake was formed when the subsoil was compacted by heavy military machinery after the Second World War. Today the lake lies harmoniously in the Osterheide and has never dried up, although it only feeds on rainwater.

The picturesque New Year's Eve lake, named after a British officer, was created by the consolidation of the subsoil as the heavy military planes drove through the area (until 1994). It blends harmoniously into the Osterheide today, and although it only feeds itself with rainwater, it never dried up.
