Lohmen Castle is enthroned on a rock above the Wesenitz and was first mentioned in 1524. Today's palace wing was built by the von Schönburg family and served mainly as an administrative seat and supply center for the Saxon court. In the 18th century, the castle and the associated estate were expanded.

Unfortunately, after the Second World War, some parts of the castle were removed for the dismantling of building materials, which means that the castle and the estate are only partially preserved today.

In 1998 the renovation of the castle began, and in May 2001 the ceremonial inauguration took place. Today the castle houses the city administration of Lohmen and offers rooms for cultural events. The manor wing was restored in 2004 and now houses medical and physiotherapy practices as well as a retirement home.

At the beginning of the Lohmen Gorge, Lohmen Castle towers high up on the sandstone cliffs. Below there are some shady seating areas by the river where you can relax or have a picnic.
Lohmen Castle in Saxony has a long history. It served as a residential and hunting lodge and was of particular importance in the 18th century due to sheep breeding. After the Second World War it fell into disrepair, but was renovated thanks to the community's commitment. Since 2001 it has housed the municipal office, the library and the tourist information.

Lohmen Castle is located on a steep spur directly at the mouth of the trout river in the river Wesenitz. The triangular spur castle from the 13th century was originally built to protect a quarry and was converted into a castle around 1800. Today it houses the municipal office. The complex still clearly shows its original shape and size. The neck ditch was in the place of the road, and parts of the ring wall have been preserved here. The buildings were also connected to the ring wall, remains can still be seen in the north-west. A view of the valley opens up from a small terrace.

The city administration is located in the castle, the courtyard and the viewing balcony as well as the small castle park are open to the public at all times and invite you to visit them.

Directly below the castle, at the "Alten Furt", there is a rest area from which you can enjoy this view of the castle.

The history of the castle goes back to the beginning of the settlement of the area. In 1523, the brothers Wolf and Ernst von Schönburg acquired Hohnstein Castle, the Lohmen manor and Wehlen Castle. Hohnstein is combined with Lohmen into a princely dual office. A year later, Ernst von Schönburg had today's palace wing built. From this time on, the name "Schloss Lohmen" is common. After several changes of ownership, the castle remained in the permanent possession of the House of Wettin from 1619 and, after the Thirty Years' War, served as a residence and widow's seat as well as a hostel for Augustus the Strong's hunting guests. Until the middle of the 18th century, the palace wing housed the offices and the apartments of the court and other officials. The most important task of the property associated with the castle was to supply the Saxon court in Dresden. In addition, the castle and estate were significantly expanded and extended in the 18th century.

"Lohmen Castle and its immediate surroundings is a charming spot, and we can rightly call it the pearl of the entire Wesenitz Valley in terms of scenic beauty. The historical memories associated with the place make staying here even more appealing.”

A little insider tip: the castle balcony between the buildings is accessible and offers a wonderful view of the Wesenitztal and invites you to take a break.

Between the 2 buildings there is a small cast iron gate which is not locked. Behind it you can enter a viewing balcony that lies high above the Weesenitztal and offers a great view over the river and the rows of houses in the valley.

The castle wing on the edge of the rocks towards the Wesenitz was built in 1524 by order of the Lords of Schönburg and served as the administrative headquarters of the Hohnstein district with Lohmen until 1857. The associated estate had been state-owned since 1619 as a chamber estate and was always leased.

The chamber estate also included a malthouse, brewery (first mentioned in 1581, closed in 1925) and distillery. The latter was located in the building that served as an old church until 1789.

The last tenants moved out in 1985 and the castle continued to deteriorate. It was not until 1999 that renovation work could begin for use as the Lohmen municipal office.

                                            Lohmen Castle and Manor.

                                            Information:

Prominently situated above the Wesenitz valley, the castle is significant in terms of its architectural, landscape, and local history. The castle wing, built on the rocky outcrop overlooking the Wesenitz River, was constructed in 1524 and served as the administrative center for the Hohnstein district, including Lohmen, until 1857, when it became a manor.

The complex, partly dating from the Renaissance and partly from the Baroque period (in the case of the separate, detached wing), is now used and maintained by the municipality.
