Beautiful place with many leisure activities and sights, e.g. the Hirtenberg (563m), the castle with museum and the market fountain. The area around Hartenstein was first mentioned in a document in 1008. However, finds in the Petershöhle and in the Kühloch suggest that settlements date back to the Stone Age. Hartenstein Castle was probably built in 1250 by the Reich Ministries of Neidstein. The castle and town were besieged several times by Nuremberg troops, but they could never be taken. In 2003, the municipality of Hartenstein was able to purchase the castle and open it to the public for the first time in its history. Today it houses an exhibition on knighthood in Franconia as well as a restaurant.burg-hartenstein-touche.de
