The Fürstenberger Tor, like the Templiner and Stargarder Tor, was once part of the medieval city wall. It was created in the 14th century. However, the entire city fortifications were not completed until the 17th century. The gate clerk used to collect customs duties for imports and exports in the tower. Today there is a seniors' meeting there. The actual gate was demolished in the 19th century.
In front of the Fürstenberger Gate there was a ditch that created the connection between Oberpfuhlsee, Nesselpfuhlsee and Stadtsee. This was also part of the city fortifications.
