The largest moor eye of the Bavarian Forest National Park, at around 1,000 square meters, is framed by moor and mountain pines that do not grow upright but rather recumbent. Because of this growth form, the pines are called mountain pines. A boardwalk with a platform, which is part of the Schachten und Filze adventure trail (marked 'Wolf'), leads directly to the lake. The acidic water is extremely low in nutrients. The moor landscape offers only a few highly specialized species, such as the mud sedge or the Andromeda heather, suitable habitat.
