An imposing structure with a long and fascinating history, the Gaswerksteg (formerly also known as the Gasrohrsteg or Gassteg) spans the Danube Canal in Vienna, connecting the Landstraße and Leopoldstadt districts. Built between July 25, 1898, and July 16, 1899, the 64-meter-long Gaswerksteg carried a large gas pipeline from the municipal gasworks in Simmering to Vienna's 2nd district. In 1988, the bridge was extended on both sides and equipped with ramps for easier access.
