The parish church dedicated to Saint Vitus was probably founded by the Corvey monastery on the Weser in 1130.

After Henry the Lion destroyed Bardowich in 1189, without sparing the churches, St. Viti was repeatedly repaired.

During the Thirty Years' War, the Viti Church burned down completely. The half-timbered tower on the northern edge of the Viti Cemetery was rebuilt by 1657. The two new bells served as storm bells. The church itself was not rebuilt.

After another fire in 1725, the half-timbered tower was rebuilt, but this time in the middle of the cemetery hill.

A half-timbered tower with red bricks stands on a small open space in the middle of Bardowick. It goes back to the St. Viti Church, which was built in the 12th century. As early as 1189, it was badly damaged in an attack by Henry the Lion. During the Thirty Years' War, the repaired church was so badly damaged that it was finally demolished in the 17th century. The construction of the bell tower in the 18th century was apparently planned as a free construction without a church building, after all, the cathedral already had a representative, large church in the village. On special occasions, such as at the turn of the year, the ringing of the Viti Tower can still be heard.
