The Gothic church began as a wooden church in the 8th century. This was transformed into a stone church around the year 1000. The entrance area still dates from this time, but the rest of the church was destroyed with the town of Bardowick in an attack by Henry the Lion. It was rebuilt as a hall church between 1380 and 1485 in the Gothic style. It was planned as a bishopric, but because the then bishop preferred to stay in Verden, it was never used as such.
Treasures such as the baptismal font from 1367, the high altar from 1425 or the oak-carved choir stalls from 1486 can be found in the cathedral. One of the six bells in the tower is still from 1130.
The cathedral bears the signet "reliably open church" and invites you to meet and reflect.kirchenkreis-lueneburg.de/ihre_gemeinden/kirchengemeinden_land/bardowick

There are numerous great sand/gravel paths around the cathedral that are easy to cycle on. A playground is also nearby.
