This church is dedicated to Saint Clemens, the patron saint of sailors, and is located directly on the main road in Kongsmark.
The famous Romo Commander stones can be found on the northern outer wall,
so a stop here is highly recommended.
Built around 1200, its exact history in the Middle Ages is still a mystery. It was probably first built in the Romanesque style, as some building elements indicate. The tower, however, is clearly Gothic and shows the typical shape that was common in Schleswig at the time.
The dates always indicate one of the many restorations and extensions to the church. Due to the harsh weather and the ever-increasing population as well as the growing wealth, these were very often necessary.
The initials CN and JM can be seen in the northern gable area and the southern facade. These are reminiscent of the parish priest Christian Neve and the parish leader Jesper Mathiesen.romo-tonder.dk/de/listing/vandretur-kirkeby-plantage

A piece of contemporary history on Rømø. Good for a little stop on the bike.

As a child, I always loved the ship models in the churches. Nice little building, worth a visit. Everything was very well maintained.
