The lake was created between 1955 and 1973 from a closed lignite mine in the "North" field of the 1958 closed briquette factory "Concordia" of the entrepreneur Carl Brendgen. Brown coal was mined here from 1902. The lake itself is a nature reserve. There are year-round protected spawning zones for amphibians as well as protection and resting zones for other animals that are not allowed to be entered.
