The Pfungstädter Moor was created by diverting the Neckar bed in Roman times. The aim was to straighten the Neckar and thus optimize navigability. Peat and reeds have been commercially mined in the area throughout history.
The Pfungstädter Moor has been a nature reserve since 1955.
