The Col du Hundsrück is the highest point of the D14b, which runs from Bitschwiller-lès-Thann to Masevaux. The road was built as a military road by French General Joseph Joffre during World War I to give French troops access to Masmünster and the Thanner Valley.
We owe this not entirely unencumbered past a narrow, winding little road that is almost traffic-free (at least on weekdays). At the apex you will find the Auberge de la Fourmi ("Restaurant at the Ant") - a popular starting point for excursions in the region, which is often visited by hikers. To the south there is a great view of the Alsatian plain and the Burgundian Gate, through which the Rhine originally flowed into the Mediterranean. To the north you can see the Grand Ballon.
