In the Würzburg Lehenbuch of 1303, "Büchelein" was first mentioned, which probably meant Oberbüchlein. In 1316 both places were mentioned as "Bvchelin, Nidernbuch" in the Gültbuch of the Nuremberg Clarissa Monastery. In 1413 the place was first referred to as "Obernpuchleins". The place name is based on a field name of the same name, which is derived from the Middle High German word "buoch" (= beech) with a diminutive suffix and therefore means a small beech forest.[2] The place belonged to the Burggravial Office Roßtal, with manorial rights of Nuremberg citizens. In 1418 the village consisted of three farms, the Nuremberg Spitalhof No. 1/2, the Schwabacher Spitalhof No. 3/4 and the Hallerhof No. 4/5.

Towards the end of the 18th century there were 6 properties in Oberbüchlein. The Brandenburg-Ansbach judge's office Roßtal exercised the high court and the village and community rule. Landlords were the Cadolzburg caste office (1 courtyard, 1 half-yard, shepherd's house), the Schwabach hospital (1 courtyard), the Nuremberg hospital authority (1 courtyard) and the Nuremberg owner von Haller (1 courtyard).[4]

As part of the municipal edict, Oberbüchlein was assigned to the Großweismannsdorf tax district formed in 1808. It belonged to the rural community Gutzberg founded in the same year. 1 property was subject to the voluntary jurisdiction of the Nemsdorf patrimonial court from 1823 to 1835.[5]

On July 1, 1972, Oberbüchlein came to Stein with the community of Gutzberg.
