Located in the saddle of the Gleichberge, our special museum for prehistory and early history of South Thuringia offers vivid insights into economic and cultural life from the Mesolithic around 8000 BC. BC to the High Middle Ages.
Museum and nearby stone castle, the castle of the Celts from 5th to 1st century BC. Chr., Form a unique ensemble. Their impressive culture is the focus of our permanent exhibition, which was redesigned in 1996. At the turn of the ages, the Steinsburg was abandoned by its residents. The huge complex fell into disrepair, the mountain was covered with forest.
View of the exhibitionMany roads lead to the Steinsburg. If the visibility is good, you can enjoy a unique panorama after the ascent. The archaeological hiking trail and the Celtic adventure trail open up the prehistoric wealth of the Gleichberg landscape.
In five exhibition rooms the development of the material culture and the way of life from the hunters of the Mesolithic to the farmers of the Neolithic, Bronze Age and pre-Roman Iron Age to the inhabitants of the high medieval settlement (Altenrömhild) is shown. The focus is on the Celtic settlement of the Steinsburg on the Kleiner Gleichberg from the 5th to the 1st century BC. Chr.
