In the possession of the Kunibertstift, a chapel belonging to the abbey was named as a branch of the abbey in 1236. In 1260 the auxiliary altar of the chapel was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Heinrich I of Montfort to St. Catherine.

Old Katharina is a gem in the old fishing village Niehl. Here the Nippeser drove and ran to the service, because they had no own church yet. For the faithful from Nippes the way led over the still existing "Niehler Kirchweg".

For centuries, the Old Niehl Church was also the place of worship for today's suburbs of Riehl, Nippes and Mauenheim, as the street name Niehler Kirchweg clearly shows. In the course of time, however, these places were all separated from Niehl and became independent parishes.
A new church is required in Niehl

The Old Church became too small for Niehl himself at the end of the century before last. Increasing industrialization and incorporation to Cologne (1888) brought with it a steady increase in the population, so that the construction of a newer and larger church was necessary. In 1892 the church council commissioned the architect Theodor Kremer to build a neo-Romanesque church.

The laying of the foundation stone on October 2, 1892 took place under Pastor G. Rudolph Niemann. The consecration followed almost 2 years later; on June 5, 1894, Auxiliary Bishop Dr. Hermann Josef Schmitz in a solemn consecration the building of his destination. However, the church was not finally finished until 1913 with the painting.

While the church survived World War I without damage, it suffered severe damage in World War II. Pastor Peifer, who took over the parish in 1947, worked with the church council to secure the building and restore the church quickly.
