It is finally freely accessible again! The Posidonia slate pit was closed for a long time because of the risk of collapse and only the park-like facility could be entered. Now you can get close again.

A unique natural monument with opportunities for a break. The former slate mine was created by the extraction of oil-bearing slate for cement production. After mining ceased in 1902, the mine was recultivated by the municipality and converted into a recreational facility in 1975. The remaining Posidonia slate wall has been protected as a unique natural monument under the Federal Nature Conservation Act. This slate wall is the only outcrop of black Jurassic or Posidonia slate in the Upper Rhine region. It formed in the Liassic period, the oldest period of the Jurassic period, about 175 million years ago, as a deposit of animal and plant remains from a tropical sea. This resulted in the slate with numerous imprints of dead organisms, especially the small mussel Posidonomya, which gave the slate its name.
