The first documented in 953 as Gutingi village on the River Leine was created in the environment of today's St. Albani Church. The later founded market town of Gotingen gained city rights around 1230, while the original village of Gutingi remained for a long time outside and a shadowy existence. Göttingen became a city in 1964 and today is one of the nine regional centers of Lower Saxony (Wikipedia).
