Bad Saarow is located on the shores of Lake Scharmützel, the second largest lake in Brandenburg and is part of the only conservation area in the region. The direct connection to Berlin, the fantastic ambience and the extensive leisure facilities give Bad Saarow a special quality of life.

The Scharmützelsee is the second largest of more than 3,000 lakes in Brandenburg. The Scharmützelseegebiet is a 12,432 ha landscape conservation area, parts of which are the only nature reserve in the region.

In 2012, the Scharmützelsee was voted the most popular lake in Brandenburg and in 2013 the "Lieblingssee der Deutschen" in the annual online survey by Seen.de.
