Balkan route is great! Perfect asphalt and even up to Burscheid completely without crossing roads! But even afterwards the crossings are harmless, if you look at the z. B. compares with the Vennbahn. Interrupted in Wermelskirchen, but this is a pretty place. If there was still an underground connection to the right side of the Rhine and you would not always have to wander through this city bustle in Leverkusen ... I'm still looking for it.

The Balkan route connects the beautiful Remscheid district of Lennep (it is essential to make the short detour to the old town) with Opladen. So the hills of the Bergisches Land with the beginning of the Lower Rhine plain.
It is perfectly paved, rolls fine. Apart from having to meander through Wermelskirchen, there is very little disruption from crossing streets.
On nice weekends, however, there is a lot going on on the route, so that brisk cycling is hardly possible or will result in recklessness. However, if you are willing to take it easy on such days, you can still use the route.
There are a few places to stop for refreshments right along the route.
At Bergisch Born, the Balkan route merges directly into the beginning (or the end?) of the Wippertalbahn route, which leads via Hückeswagen and Wipper to Marienheide.
